Origami and Troop Parties

Girl Scout troops, Boy Scout troops, and other types of groups are always looking for projects their kids can do and ways they can help the community. Origami is one way to do this.

Origami is something that is easy to do and something that kids of all ages can work on. Start out with the beginning projects and slowly work your way to more advanced projects.

You can let the kids come up with the ideas or the troop leader or parents can make this decision. Print out the instructions and make enough copies for the kids to each have one of their own. Also, make sure you have enough supplies for each of the kids. The only supply necessary is paper. You can get all sorts of colors.

Check with your local hobby store to see if they have origami supplies or kits. There are also websites that offer supplies and if you tell them what your group is, you might be able to get a discount on your purchase. They may not offer it, but it doesn?t hurt to ask.

Once you have the pieces made, let the children decide what they want to do with them. Some suggestions would be the kids ward at the hospital or a senior center.

Origami is fun for kids of all ages and it?s a great way to come together as a group and contribute something to the community.

Edible Origami – Really?

There is a new craze hitting the origami wave and this one is edible. Origami creations made from edible substances. This is a new way to take the art of origami to a whole new level.

Japanese restaurants are infamous for creating beautifully designed origami foods as presentations and some as the main course. They use Nori, or otherwise commonly known as seaweed, to place decorative garnishes on dishes. They can create even the most intricate design using the seaweed and this is no small feat.

Seaweed is not something you would think would fold rather easily, but they use a dampening method to make the seaweed more pliable without it tearing. They then can create dragons, flowers and a million other creations to spruce up an otherwise boring presentation.

There is even a company called Origami Foods who offer various sheets of fruit or vegetable paper to mold into origami designs. This is great way for kids to get involved in making crafts as well as get them to eat their fruits and veggies.

Another way people have been making origami fun to eat is by making it out of chocolate or fondant, which is basically a type of icing that can be rolled out and shaped almost like play-doh can. This is the perfect way to design a cake for a special occasion or as decoration for cupcakes.

The more advanced origami maker can make designs from won-ton wrappers, heated sugar or even a fruit roll-up. I don’t think there is a limitation to what you can use, as long as you can fold it into a design, you can create edible art.

This is such a fun take on traditional origami, one that is sure to make your friends and family take notice. The only foreseeable problem, it just might look too good to eat!

Raise Money for a Food Bank with Origami

Have a party and have each child bring a can of food. This is a great way to help the food bank fill their shelves. There are a couple of ways you can do this. You can hold it at a location where children are already at, such as the Boy?s and Girl?s Club or a daycare.

The supplies are inexpensive and these places may already have some of them since they have kids at their location on a daily basis. Then to take part in this activity all they have to do is bring a can of food.

Help Brighten the Halls of a Retirement Home with Origami

Retirement homes are always looking for ways to decorate their halls to keep their residents smiling. One way to do this is to ask kids to create projects that the retirement home can put on their walls. These can be stars, flowers, quilts, or masks to name a few. The residents and family members will enjoy seeing them and the kids will have fun making them.

You can do many different things with origami and your community. Look at what you have or what you can do and work origami into it. You can even use these same ideas to decorate the halls in your school or church.

Create Flowers That Last a Lifetime

If you have ever purchased flowers for any occasion, you know how expensive they can be. You pay all of this money to have a beautiful arrangement to display or give as a gift and then two days later they are dead. It’s like throwing your money right out the window.

Have you ever thought how great it would be to have flowers that last forever? Well, there is a way to achieve this with creating origami flowers. Yep, you read that right. The art of origami can help you to create a beautiful bouquet of flowers that will last a lifetime.

Think about a wedding and how expensive it is to buy all of the flowers you need to make the wedding special. You need the bridal bouquet, the bridesmaid’s flowers, the flowers for the tables and so on and so forth. Now think about having your flowers made from paper, colorful, vibrant paper that will last forever.

Many people are now going his route, and there are even companies who offer this service. Origami arrangements are making a show simply because of how economical they are to buy or to make your self. I don’t suggest the bride and groom to be the ones to make them because though inexpensive, it can be time consuming if you are a beginner.

You could either buy them from a company or have a friend or family member make them for you. It doesn’t stop at weddings either; flowers of all kinds can be made for any occasion from baby showers to Valentine’s Day.

This is a personal expression that will surely make the recipient feel special and besides that, they can have them as a keepsake to keep for years to come. Take a look at some craft stores and see what kinds of colorful papers you can find to create your one of a kind flower creations.

Origami and Kirigami

We all know what origami is, you fold a single piece of paper several times and it ultimately turns into something else. Kirigami is a varaiation of the original origami art and is made by the same technique of folding a piece of paper. The difference is, once the paper is folded, a series of cuts are made into the paper to create a more elaborate model.

You may even have made kirigami without even knowing you were creating it. Have you ever made a paper snowflake? If so, then you have made kirigami. Folding the paper into different shapes and then cutting into the base so when unfolded a snowflake like design is presented makes the snowflakes.

This is a great craft for children to partake in and even use as decorations around classrooms or in the home. Just punch a small hole in the snowflake and insert string to hang. Children love creating things and this gives them the opportunity to be as creative as they can be. Try also using different colored paper for a special effect.

A woman by the name of Florence Temko actually created the term “kirigami” when describing her book on paper cutting. It was so popular that the actual Japanese people adopted this term to describe the art. It was appropriate as the word “kiri” means the act of cutting and the word “gami” means paper.

There are more intricate forms of kirigami that take on various shapes and intricate cuts to create a more architectural model. This is something that is done by those who have had years of practice, as they can be quite elaborate and even full-scale models of famous buildings.

This art is one to be learned and practiced, so why not start out with a few snowflakes and see how far you can go with that and then let your imagination flow.

Origami Tools ? Paper

The paper used to make Origami designs is special in that it is thin but heavy. There are also many different types of paper that you can purchase for specific designs. Here are some types of paper and a little about each.

Origami paper

Origami paper is square most of the time, but it can also be a rectangle or a circle. These sheets also come in different colors, but most of the time they are white on one side and then colored on the other side.

Foil

Foil makes for awesome projects, but they are a little harder to fold. They come in many different colors as well. The down side to foil is a fold will put a crease on the paper which means you will ruin the design if you unfold and fold again.

Animal print

This type of paper is especially good for kids. They come in many different prints and will allow kids to use their imagination when creating projects. The down side to animal prints is they don?t look very good as a three dimensional piece.

There are many other types of paper that you can purchase. You can purchase some of these at craft or hobby stores while others are only available online.

The Most Popular Origami Creation of All Time

Origami, the ancient art of paper folding which began in China but grew to incredible popularity in Japan, is one of the oldest and most practiced forms of art today. Without a doubt, the most well known form of origami is the crane. This one form has so many things tied to it that it deserves it’s own place in the history of art.

Back in Japan, a long time ago, the crane represented loyalty, honor and love and because of this, the origami crane has always held a great significance to the Japanese people as well as people all over the world. Presenting a gift of an origami crane was considered to be a very special thing and was always appreciated.

One piece of lore surrounding the crane involved the creation of 1,000 cranes by a single person. If someone were able to do this, it was said they would be granted one special wish. Many people used this to gain the love of another or for victory in battle. Recently, an organization wanted to create one million cranes as a sign of world piece and they didn’t just make the goal; they beat it by over 200,000 cranes!

The crane is also very much used at weddings as a way to wish the happy couple a long and happy life together. Using the cranes as decoration, centerpieces and even as artwork is large groups is not an uncommon theme. The gifts are even more important when they are crafted by those who are either attending the wedding or when made by the bride and groom themselves.

The origami crane has survived over a thousand years and its design has not really changed at all nor has the importance and significance of the form. Learning to create this piece of origami is a must if you plan on delving into this time-honored art form.

Origami Tessellations

Tessellations are known as designs that are placed together without gaps between them. You might see tessellations in brick or pavement. Origami Tessellations are not created separately. One large piece of paper is used when they are created.

To make an Origami Tessellation you take one piece of paper and fold it in such a way that patterns are created. There are a couple of different ways to do an Origami Tessellation and there are books you can purchase to learn out to make them.

Origami Tessellations are very detailed and take a lot of time and patients to make. When they are complete, they are beautiful and very interesting to look at. Most times these designs are completely flat. When you look at them or put them into the light, they could appear to be three dimensional. This look will depend on the design on the paper or the designs within the folds.

Origami Tessellations are fun to make and you can use many different types of paper. Be creative when you make these types of Origami pieces.

Origami Wedding Tradition

The Japanese often practice a tradition of folding 1,000 paper cranes to ensure the couple will have a long and happy life together. This tradition is called, Tsuru wa sennen. This tradition isn’t one that can be done over night and the time and patience it takes represent the couple’s loyalty to one another.

Both the man and the woman as a symbol of their love usually do it but it has also been down by the families of the bride and groom to show their love and support to the couple. The groom or the bride will also commonly make the cranes separately to show their devotion to the other one.

The cranes themselves are used as decoration; either strung and used as decoration garland or placed on tables as centerpieces. The choice of the color is one that is decided by the couple to symbolize their love. It can be a traditional white crane or any other color that fits the couple getting married.

Folding 1,000 cranes is also said to bring the couple’s dreams to reality, perhaps this is why so many couples still partake in this tradition. It is a very romantic way to show your love and create memorable keepsakes for you and your guests.

There are companies who will make the cranes for you and actually ship them to you. This takes away from the tradition as the person’s getting married are supposed to make the cranes to show loyalty but if you are pressed for time, you do have this option.

Whichever way you decide to go with this tradition, the tradition of folding cranes is one that will continue to be carried out for many more years to come because of the hope and the promise of a future life lived happily ever after.
